About Golden Eagle Coins

Golden Eagle Coins was founded in 1974 by Robert W. Mangels and Richard J. Stelfox. Bob and Rich began operations in 1964 by attending local coin shows and expanding on Bob's ever-growing coin ventures. In 1974, they opened the doors to their first shop in Adelphi, MD. Over the years they have ventured into various areas of the collectible business, including currency, memorabilia, jewelry, and stamps. Their focus throughout the years, however, has always been on U.S. coins and bullion investing and trading.

As time went on, dealers around the country began to recognize their work ethic, knowledge of coin value, and practice of fair dealing. Golden Eagle Coins is in attendance at up to 42 national coin shows/conventions per year and is an annual attendee at every national ANA convention each year since 1973, making the company a well-connected coin dealer. Maryland coin collectors have always relied on Golden Eagle Coins for their numismatic needs.

As the company grew in size, Golden Eagle Coins began to cater to other companies’ want lists and became a main supplier of various numismatic materials. In the late 90's, management made the decision to offer its services to the average collector via the Internet and mail order, as was the trend with other coin dealers. MD collectors, as well as collectors around the world, could now view Golden Eagle Coins’ large inventory, take advantage of huge savings, and purchase a wide range of numismatic products, including gold and silver bullion products. For silver and gold bars, platinum products, palladium products, proofs, mint sets, and other supplies, Golden Eagle Coins is one of the most trusted names in the business.

NIA's Golden Eagle Coins Review

Golden Eagle Coins is one of the smallest companies in our review. Golden Eagle Coins' web site is easy to navigate using the menu on the left side of the page, where you start out by choosing between gold, silver, platinum, or palladium. Once choosing the type of precious metal, you can then choose between many types of coins or choose to view their list of bars for sale. For gold, Golden Eagle Coins offers a large variety of coins including the American Eagles, American Buffalo, Canadian Maple Leafs, South African Kruggerands, Austrian Philharmonics, Chinese Pandas, Mexican Gold Coins, European Gold Coins, and more. For many of their coins, Golden Eagle Coins offers a number of different sizes including: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.

Golden Eagle Coins' web site has a layout similar to APMEX. It is very easy to navigate but unfortunately you can't compare all of their products together on one page. It's difficult to compare prices of different types of coins without taking notes.

We noticed when ordering from Golden Eagle Coins' web site that many of their products were out of stock. The great thing is, Golden Eagle Coins displays the exact amount of inventory available for each coin, which was unique for the companies in our review.

At the time of our review update, Golden Eagle Coins’ prices were $12.92 higher than Bullion Direct for a 1 oz American Eagle gold coin, $2.34 higher than Bullion Direct for a 1 oz Canadian Maple Leaf, $7.61 higher than Gainesville Coins for a 1 oz South African Kruggerand, and $8.92 higher than Kitco for a 1 oz gold bar. Golden Eagle Coins’ prices for gold decline slightly when ordering in quantity.

For silver, Golden Eagle Coins’ price for one 1 oz American Eagle Silver Coin was $1.60 higher than Lear Capital at the time of our review update. Golden Eagle Coins’ prices for silver decline slightly when ordering in quantity.

Golden Eagle Coins did offer "less than perfect" 1 oz American Eagles at a price that was $2 below their price for normal 1 oz American Eagles, making them the cheapest silver 1 oz American Eagles available out of all the companies in the review. Golden Eagle Coins says that their "less than perfect" 1 oz American Eagles silver coins "have scratches, tarnished, colorized etc". For orders over $1,000, Golden Eagle Coins charges a standard $24.95 shipping/processing fee and does not offer an expedited shipping option.

When placing our order, the shipping/processing fees jumped by an additional $38.46 because we were paying by credit card. When we called customer service to ask about this fee, we were told by the customer service agent that they believe the credit card transaction fee is around 3.2%, but they weren’t sure of the exact amount. Their web site claims the credit card fee is between 2% and 3%, but they don’t call it an additional fee, they say by using a credit card you are “opting not to take advantage of the cash discounted rate” (which are the bullion prices displayed on their site).

Golden Eagle Coins charges a 5% restocking fee for returns plus any market loss.

When placing our order, Golden Eagle Coins gave us an exact expected ship date, which was unique for the companies in our review. Overall, we had a great sense of satisfaction when ordering through Golden Eagle Coins.

Our order from Golden Eagle Coins arrived in 8 days (5 business days including the Thanksgiving holiday).
