The National Inflation Association (NIA) <\/strong>would like to acknowledge the successful<\/span> rescue effort<\/strong> at the Red Chris Mine<\/strong>, jointly owned by Newmont (NYSE: NEM)<\/strong> and Imperial Metals (TSX: III)<\/strong>, located in the Golden Triangle<\/strong> of British Columbia. Many people were asking if the U.S. possesses<\/span> superior specialized<\/span> equipment<\/strong> and technology<\/strong> that could help <\/strong><\/span>extract<\/strong><\/span> the trapped<\/span> miners<\/strong>. We always knew that Canada<\/strong> would do it and wouldn't<\/strong><\/span> have to ask for Trump's help<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The Red Chris<\/strong> operation has historically functioned as an open-pit mine<\/strong>. The miners<\/strong> were trapped<\/strong><\/span> in a newer<\/span> underground section<\/strong> that British Columbia is attempting to fast-track<\/strong><\/span> into production<\/strong><\/span>. Because this underground component isn’t<\/span><\/strong> yet fully operational<\/strong><\/span>, the mine<\/strong> did not<\/strong><\/span> have the necessary<\/span> equipment<\/strong> on standby<\/strong><\/span> to handle a collapse<\/strong><\/span> of this magnitude.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Fortunately, Newmont <\/strong>also owns the nearby Brucejack Mine<\/strong> — developed<\/strong><\/span> by the legendary<\/strong><\/span> Dr. Quartermain<\/strong> — and was able to transfer<\/span> specialized<\/span> remote-operated scooping equipment<\/strong> to the site. Operated via high-definition monitors<\/strong> from a safe<\/span> distance<\/strong>, this machinery<\/strong> was used to carefully<\/span> remove <\/span>debris blocking<\/span><\/strong> the access ramp<\/strong> without risking<\/strong><\/span> additional lives<\/strong> in what remains an unstable<\/span> environment<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As debris<\/strong> was removed<\/span><\/strong> with the remote scooper<\/strong>, drones<\/strong> were used to monitor<\/span><\/strong> the situation from above to ensure no<\/strong><\/span> further<\/strong><\/span> rock cave ins<\/strong>. Luckily the trapped<\/span> miners <\/strong>stayed within a MineARC refuge chamber<\/strong> — a sealed<\/span><\/strong>, steel safety pod<\/strong> designed for emergencies<\/span><\/strong> like this. These chambers<\/strong> typically contain enough food<\/span><\/strong>, water<\/span><\/strong>, and oxygen<\/span><\/strong> to sustain up to<\/span> 16 people<\/strong> for 72 hours<\/strong>. Newmont rescued<\/span><\/strong> them within only 60 hours<\/strong>!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The scale<\/strong> of the collapse<\/strong><\/span> was staggering<\/strong><\/span>. Debris <\/strong>was estimated to be 20–30 meters long<\/strong> and up to 7–8 meters high<\/strong> — significantly larger<\/strong><\/span> than similar<\/strong><\/span> incidents<\/strong><\/span> that have occurred in countries like Mexico<\/strong> or South Africa<\/strong>. Drone surveillance<\/strong> confirmed<\/strong><\/span> that natural airflow<\/strong><\/span> was still circulating<\/strong><\/span> through the mine<\/strong>. If the trapped<\/span> miners<\/strong> exhausted<\/strong><\/span> the resources<\/strong> in their refuge pod<\/strong>, there would have been another chamber 700 meters away<\/strong> stocked<\/strong><\/span> with additional<\/span> supplies<\/strong> — but moving toward<\/strong><\/span> it would've carried risks<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Newmont’s priority<\/span><\/strong> was clearing<\/strong><\/span> enough debris <\/strong>to reestablish<\/strong><\/span> a line of sight<\/strong>. Doing so allowed the mine’s leaky-feeder communication system<\/strong> — which was knocked offline<\/strong><\/span> by a second rockfall — to come back online<\/strong><\/span>. Once communications<\/strong> were restored<\/strong><\/span>, rescuers<\/strong> were able to better assess<\/strong><\/span> the miners’ condition<\/strong> and inform<\/strong><\/span> them of the rescue plan<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The three courageous miners: Kevin Coumbs, Darien Maduke, and Jesse Chubaty are contractors for Hy-Tech Drilling. After recent tragic events involving Jesse Korppi at West Red Lake’s Madsen Mine in Ontario this is very positive news.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
