In our opinion, a chart of VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) shares outstanding<\/strong> is equivalent<\/strong><\/span> to retail investor interest<\/strong> in gold stocks<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

GDX shares outstanding<\/strong> have gone straight down<\/strong><\/span> in 2025 year-to-date<\/strong> and finished last week at a new 9-year low <\/strong><\/span>despite GDX<\/strong> being the top performing<\/span> ETF<\/strong> of 2025.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

It is impossible<\/strong><\/span> to express in words how early<\/strong><\/span> we are into this gold miner\/explorer <\/strong><\/span>rally<\/strong><\/span>. Almost all of the buying<\/strong><\/span> so far has come from hedge fund managers<\/strong> like John Paulson<\/strong>.
