NIA discussed how Scottish football club Hearts<\/strong><\/span> had just “built a new<\/span> hotel<\/strong> at their stadium<\/strong> sort of like our Canadian members<\/strong> have at the Skydome<\/strong>, only much nicer<\/strong><\/span>!” We highlighted<\/strong><\/span> how Hearts<\/strong><\/span> were a rising<\/span> football club<\/strong> in Scotland versus Rangers<\/strong> going downhill<\/strong><\/span> fast.<\/p>\n\n

For the last 40 years, Celtic<\/strong> and Rangers<\/strong> have dominated<\/span> Scottish football<\/strong>… but that all changed in 2026! Up until early this month, Scotland<\/strong> was witnessing<\/strong><\/span> its most incredible<\/strong><\/span>, legitimate<\/strong><\/span> three-team title race in 41 years<\/strong>. Hearts<\/span><\/strong>, Rangers<\/strong>, and Celtic<\/strong> were neck-and-neck at the top of the Scottish Premiership standings<\/strong>, shredding<\/strong><\/span> the usual “two-horse race”<\/strong> script that had persisted for four decades. Hearts<\/strong><\/span> had 70 points<\/strong><\/span>, Rangers 69 points<\/span><\/strong>, and Celtic 67 points<\/span><\/strong>. After Hearts<\/span> defeated<\/span> Rangers 2-1<\/strong> on May 4th, and Celtic defeated<\/span> Rangers 3-1<\/strong> on May 10th, it became a two-team race<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Hearts<\/strong><\/span> traveled to Celtic Park<\/strong> today needing only a draw<\/strong><\/span> to secure<\/strong><\/span> their first<\/span> league title<\/strong> since 1960. Hearts<\/strong><\/span> had sat at the top<\/strong><\/span> of the table in first<\/span> place<\/strong> for the last 226 days<\/strong> and as recently as one month ago had a 72% chance of winning<\/strong><\/span> the championship<\/strong>. Prior to today, Celtic<\/strong> had spent a grand total<\/strong> of just one day<\/strong> at the top<\/strong><\/span> of the table in first<\/span> place<\/strong> this season.<\/p>\n\n

In the first<\/span> 42 minutes<\/strong> of today’s game, nobody<\/strong><\/span> scored<\/strong><\/span> a goal<\/strong>. Finally, in the 43rd minute, Hearts<\/strong><\/span> scored<\/strong><\/span> a goal<\/strong><\/span> making it look like the 41-year-old duopoly<\/strong> was finally dead<\/strong><\/span>! Just before the halftime whistle (45+4 minutes), Celtic<\/strong> was awarded<\/strong><\/span> a penalty<\/strong> and Arne Engels<\/strong> stepped up<\/strong><\/span> and slotted the ball in<\/strong><\/span>, leveling<\/strong><\/span> the score and calming the home crowd just before the break.<\/p>\n\n

The second half was a nerve-wracking<\/strong><\/span> affair with both sides pressing. With less than<\/span> four minutes<\/strong> of normal time remaining, the game was tied<\/span> 1-1<\/strong> and Hearts<\/strong><\/span> just needed to hold<\/strong><\/span> Celtic<\/strong> off to win the championship<\/strong><\/span> for the first time in 66 years. The dramatic breakthrough<\/strong><\/span> arrived in the 87th minute<\/strong> when Daizen Maeda tapped home<\/span><\/strong> from close range, causing the home crowd<\/strong> to erupt<\/strong><\/span> into what they thought was the championship-winning celebration<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Celtic intercepted<\/span><\/strong>, broke on the counter, and substitute Callum Osmand<\/strong> rolled the ball into an empty<\/span> net<\/strong> to make it 3-1<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n
