The names of some shareholder value <\/span>creators<\/span><\/strong> in junior mining are on everybody’s lips – and on everybody’s podcasts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Others exist in the shadows<\/strong><\/span>, financing<\/strong><\/span> and building<\/span> businesses<\/strong> that create serious<\/span> shareholder wealth<\/span><\/strong>, without<\/span> fanfare<\/strong>. I’ve touched<\/strong><\/span> on a few in this space.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Elusive Scottish entrepreneur Harry Dobson<\/strong> is another. On Monday, Dobson<\/strong> was appointed executive chairman<\/a><\/strong> and a director of North Peak Resources (TSXV: NPR)<\/strong>, an exploration company focused<\/strong><\/span> on the Prospect Mountain mine project<\/strong> in Nevada.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

You may not<\/strong><\/span> have heard of North Peak<\/strong>, but perhaps you’ve heard of Kirkland Lake Gold<\/strong> and Rupert Resources (TSX: RUP)<\/strong>. Dobson<\/strong> was a founding<\/span> shareholder<\/strong> in each of them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Dobson<\/strong> grew up in the Scottish Borders and still returns there for shooting, a hobby (horse racing is another).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The genesis<\/strong><\/span> of Dobson’s billion-dollar<\/span> fortune<\/span><\/strong>, once (still?) one of Scotland’s largest<\/span><\/strong>, occurred at Yorkton Securities<\/strong> where he was a senior partner<\/strong>. Dobson<\/strong> and partner Ron Brimacombe<\/strong> (Ron’s son Al Brimacombe is now a large shareholder in many of Dobson’s deals) joined forces<\/strong><\/span> with a young hotshot named Frank Giustra<\/strong> to turn<\/strong><\/span> the upstart<\/span> brokerage<\/strong> into a global<\/span> mining powerhouse<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Dobson<\/strong> then left<\/span> Yorkton<\/strong> and started<\/span> running<\/span> <\/strong>his own deals<\/strong>, often with business partner Brian Hinchcliffe<\/strong>. The two founded<\/strong><\/span> Canadian gold play<\/span> Kirkland Lake Gold<\/strong> in 2001 and assembled several<\/strong><\/span> gold projects<\/strong><\/span> in the famed district from Kinross<\/strong>, taking the stock from $2 to $20<\/strong> over the next 10 years<\/strong>. As of 2011, Dobson owned a 6%<\/span><\/strong> stake in Kirkland Lake<\/strong>. The duo exited<\/span><\/strong> to new<\/span> adventures<\/strong> in 2014-15.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Kirkland Lake<\/strong> later merged<\/strong><\/span> with Newmarket Gold<\/strong>, adding production<\/strong><\/span> from the Fosterville mine<\/strong> in Australia to its high-grade<\/span> Macassa mine<\/strong> in Kirkland Lake. In 2021, Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM)<\/strong> bought<\/span> Kirkland Lake Gold<\/strong> for $13.5 billion<\/strong><\/span> in stock.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In 2004, Dobson<\/strong> and Hinchcliffe<\/strong> also turned their attention to Rupert Resources (TSX: RUP)<\/strong>, then a small junior with a property in Red Lake, Ontario. Rupert assembled<\/span> properties<\/strong> in Finland’s Central Lapland Greenstone Belt<\/strong>. In 2020, Rupert burst<\/span><\/strong> onto the scene with the high-grade<\/span> Ikkari gold discovery<\/span><\/strong>, which later hit 4 million ounces<\/strong><\/span> on just 36,000 metres<\/strong> of drilling<\/strong>. Rupert<\/strong> now trades at $5.21<\/strong> for a market cap of about $1.22 billion<\/strong><\/span>; Agnico<\/strong> is a 13.3%<\/span> shareholder<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Dobson<\/strong> is more well-known<\/strong><\/span> across<\/strong><\/span> the pond<\/strong><\/span>, largely a function of his stake in storied club Manchester United<\/strong> in the early 2000s. His golden touch<\/strong><\/span> extended to soccer<\/strong> — he bought<\/strong><\/span> in 2002 and sold<\/strong><\/span> the 6.5%<\/span> stake<\/strong> at a profit<\/strong><\/span> three years later, as part of a controversial <\/strong><\/span>takeover<\/strong><\/span> by American tycoon<\/span> Malcolm Glazer<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

“I knew it would attract attention,”<\/strong> Dobson<\/strong>, who was living in Monaco<\/strong>, told a reporter during a rare 2005 interview<\/a><\/strong> in The Scotsman <\/em>newspaper. “I just didn’t<\/span> expect<\/span> to find<\/span> photographers running through<\/span> my garden<\/span> and jumping over<\/span> the wall when I got home – I think one of your guys was one of the jumpers<\/span>.”<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

In addition to his mining interests<\/strong>, Dobson owns land<\/span><\/strong> in Scotland<\/strong> and Ireland<\/strong> as well as a stable<\/strong> of several dozen racehorses<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
