Strong Local Support for AWCM’s Bornite Copper Project

NIA has put together quotes from 30 years ago of how locals in Oregon strongly supported the development of Ameriwest Critical Metals (CSE: AWCM)'s 100% owned Bornite Copper Project:

George Atiyeh, a Gates resident and prominent Opal Creek preservation advocate, said, “I think it will be a good thing, as long as they do everything they say they are going to do.”

Michael Donnelly, an Oregon Natural Resources Council board member, said, “Right offhand, I thought if you're going to do mining, that's the most Earth-friendly kind I've heard of.” He followed up by saying, “If they do everything they've said they will, it should be OK.”

Tom Fencl, the co-owner of a local logging company, said, “They've got it pretty well thought out.” He followed up by saying, “It would be good for the community, because logging is going to take a step down.”

Kevin Long, the President of the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce, said, “We're excited about the possibilities that exist.” He followed up by saying, “The best thing the Forest Service could do for this community would be to really focus on this project and give it a tremendous amount of attention.”

The Stayton Area Rotary Club vice president, writing on behalf of the club, said, “The proposed mining operation will have a positive impact on the area's depressed economy without any significant detrimental environmental consequences.” He then said, “We look forward to having you as part of our Santiam Canyon community.” He also said, “If we can be of any help to you in the future, please don't hesitate to call on us.”

Dan Bradley, the Salem water superintendent, said that officials did not consider the Bornite Project a threat to water quality.

The Statesman Journal editorial board said, “Oregon might be able to live with a 1,000-foot-deep copper mine.” It also argued, “Mining should not be ruled out as incompatible with sound multiple use of the area.”

The Statesman Journal, when reporting on the Mill City public meeting, said, “Local residents gave a friendly reception” and that it “produced no public criticism of the plan.”

The Oregonian wrote in an article, “A proposed copper mine near Mill City actually has won compliments from environmentalists.” It explicitly contrasted Bornite with “strong opposition” to gold mining proposals elsewhere in Oregon.
